Woodruff Hall, built in 1929, is the older of the pair and serves as the "heart" of the Panthers' athletic program. In addition to being the home for Adelphi basketball, swimming and volleyball, the "building with two smokestacks" houses the office of the Director of Athletics, the Director of Sports Information, the Trainer's Room, and the Equipment Room. Woodruff is often referred to as the "sixth man" because of the unique home court advantage it affords the teams. With its cozy quarters, seating about 400 fans, the gym has an oval track that sits over the bleachers. During sold out events, fans often stand two or three deep on the track level, shouting down to cheer on the Panthers. This atmosphere can be disorientating for many visiting opponents. In fact, Woodruff Hall was featured in the June 20, 2005 issue of the NCAA News for its unique architecture. Home games in basketball and women's volleyball are conducted on the main floor of Woodruff Hall. One flight down is the pool which serves as host for Panther swim opponents, while on the second floor a circular track is used primarily for campus recreation purposes. As part of Adelphi's on-going construction, a new Recreation and Sports Center is slated to open in 2008, and will be the new home of the Panthers. The 2007-08 season is the last year that athletics will compete in Woodruff Hall.
