BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION Black History Month Celebration
In 2002, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Relations, created its annual Black History Month Celebration: Honoring student-athletes and alumni of color. Held in the month of February, the event continues to attract students, alumni, faculty, staff and administrators.

The event, which consists of a brunch, is open to the public. Over the years, with the assistance of the Multicultural Alumni Chapter, it has attracted many alumni back to campus, many who had lost touch with the university. The keynote speakers have included former Adelphi Dean of Athletics and Head Track Coach Ron Bazil, Congressman Gregory Meeks '75, author Patricia Elam '76, and Board of Trustees Kenneth Banks '74 and Dr. N. Gerry House.

In addition to good food and uplifting words, the event also features a live performance reflecting African-American culture as well as a multi-media video presentation.

The 78th Annual Black History Month Celebration took place on Saturday, February 13, 2010 in the Campbell Lounge of the Center for Recreation & Sports. ECAC Commissioner, Rudy Keeling, gave the keynote speech. Over 100 attendees were treated to performances by guest speaker Lawrence Smith '74 and LS JazzSounds. The morning's raffle generated $200 to the newly created Cecil K. Watkins Memorial Scholarship fund.
