April 4, 2006 Hempstead, N.Y. - On Saturday, April 1, the Adelphi University Volleyball team traveled to Hofstra University to take part in the "Spike Out Breast Cancer" spring volleyball tournament and fundraiser. The goal of the fundraiser was to raise awareness and educate young female-athletes about breast cancer while raising money for 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Coalition. The tournament hosted 15 Division I and II programs from the tri-state area, and each team was asked to donate $1 per player. There was also a table set up, where pink ribbons were distributed for a minimum $1 donation upon entry, as well as educational material on Breast Cancer and the 1 in 9 organization available. The tournament's fund raising efforts raised a total of $1,718 for the 1 in 9 organization. "We were extremely happy to participate in such a worthwhile event," Head Coach Joe Chojnacki stated. "It's a great way for us to use the sport we love to raise money for a great cause. I'm proud of the way our team played and with how much we were able to contribute." Geri Barish, President of 1 in 9, made an appearance. "I think it's wonderful to partner with another Long Island institution. It's the perfect chance to spread awareness to so many young women." According to the American Cancer Society, this year alone, it is estimated that approximately 270,000 new cases of Breast Cancer will be discovered among women in the United States.
