Volleyball Falls in Three to #2 Washburn

 
 

 
Despite a late rally, the Panthers fell short.

Oakdale, New York - Adelphi Volleyball traveled to Oakdale, New York in their first ever meeting against the #2 ranked Washburn University Lady Blues. The Panthers looked to get better as the sets went on, but their efforts were not enough to match the strength of the Lady Blues. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 7-3, 1-1 ECC while Washburn remains undefeated at 9-0.

The Panthers got off to a rocky start in the first set as the Lady Blues gained momentum early on. Adelphi was held to just 13 points in the first set and 18 in the second set but had a late rally in the last set. They built up a four point lead at 8-4, but the Lady Blues responded promptly by scoring four unanswered points to tie. The match remained close through the rest of the set, but Washburn, behind the strength of Monica Miesner's double-double (12 kills, 15 digs) pulled away and ended Adelphi's late charge.

The Panther offense was led by senior Kathleen Carney as she registered eight kills while sophomore Hilary Pavels added seven kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Heather Mau had 25 assists while junior Amy Williams and senior Samantha Johnston had 12 and 11 digs respectively.

The Panthers travel back to Oakdale on Saturday, September 13 for a non-conference matchup against the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State. The match will begin at 2:00 pm.
