March 19, 2010 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi women's tennis team defeated Holy Family University on March 18, not losing a match. With the victory the Panthers continue to roll, remaining undefeated at 9-0 overall. The team was led by junior Alda Ribeiro and freshman Maria Toft, who combined to win at first doubles, 8-2. Toft also won at first singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, with Ribeiro winning at second singles, 6-4, 7-6. Winning at third and fourth singles, respectively, were Michelle Gurda and Carolyn Smith. Gurda won in three sets, coming out on top after a tiebreaker with scores of 6-3, 5-7, and 10-2. Gurda also took top honors at second doubles, along with junior Nicole Byrnes, with a perfect 8-0. Smith won her singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and combined with junior Megan Margino to win at third doubles, 8-5. The Panthers are on the prowl this Saturday, March 20, at home against NE-10 rival Assumption at 1:00 pm ET. |
