Softball Trails After Day One Of ECAC Tournament

The Pace University Setters (32-17) defeated Bryant College and Adelphi University to advance to the championship game of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Softball Championships. Freshman pitcher Angela Locsin (Staten Island, N.Y) gave up just six hits and two runs in two complete games on the mound. Bryant College was eliminated from the tournament after dropping two games.

In game one, Adelphi downed Westminster, 2-5. Freshman Ashley Spreer (New Windsor, N.Y.) led the Panthers going 3-for-3 with a double. The Panthers led 4-0 when the Lady Titans scored two runs on a single by Laura Raible (Gibsonia, Penn.) in the top of the fourth innning. Freshman Tonia Trapani (Concord, Calif.) sealed the Adelphi victory on a RBI in the fifth inning.

In game two, Pace shutout the Bryant Bulldogs, 8-0. The Setters were led by freshman Jacequelyn Burd (Levittown, N.Y.) who went 2-for-3 including four RBI on a grand slam homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Sara Slivon (Caledonia, Wisc.) was also 2-for-3 adding three RBI and a single homerun in the sixth inning to end the game. Locsin gave up only two hits, striking out five batters in six innings as Pace advanced to the afternoon game against Adelphi.

Westminster (17-11) topped Bryant in game three, 9-1. The Lady Titans held the Bulldogs scoreless until the bottom of the fifth as freshman Deirdre Kittredge (Worcester, Mass.) singled for the RBI. Sutton captured the win for Westminster, giving up six hits and striking out five. Senior Kristie Perrotte (Glenshaw, Penn.) went 2-for-3 for the Lady Titans collecting three RBI. Bryant College finishes its season, 22-24-1.

In the final game of the afternoon, Adelphi (31-17-1) fell to Pace 6-2. The Setters took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning scoring on a wild pitch. The Panthers tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a RBI by Spreer. The Setters responded with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, 3-1. Spreer picked up her second RBI of the game to close the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Setters would go on to earn three more runs for the win.

Adelphi will face Westminster tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in game five. The winner will face Pace in the championship round at 12:00 p.m.
