Host Adelphi University fell to Pace University 4-3 in nine innings in the championship game of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament. This is the first ECAC title for the Setters as freshman pitcher Angela Locsin (San Martin, Calif.) picked up Tournament MVP honors. Locsin pitched all three games for Pace over two days and in 22 innings gave 14 hits, while striking out nine. Adelphi finishes its season 32-18-1, while the Setters improve to 33-17.
Adelphi defeated Westminster College in the first game of the day, 5-3, to advance to the championship game. Freshman Tara Rice (Clinton, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Panthers. Senior Christina Forsythe (Massapequa, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with a RBI. Both teams remained scoreless until the second inning when freshman Tonia Trapani (Concord, Calif.) singled to right field for the RBI. Senior Monica Dunn (Manor, Penn.) hit a double in the bottom of the second to put Westminster on board, 1-1. The Panthers would score three more runs over the next three innings to lead, 5-3. The Lady Titans rallied back late in the sixth inning, 5-4. Forsythe singled in the top of the seventh for the win, 5-3, as Adelphi advanced to the championship game against Pace. Allison Schultz (10-3) picked up the win, giving up six hits and striking out five.
In game two, Pace jumped out to an early lead, going up 2-0, in the first inning. Adelphi would not score until the bottom of the fourth inning when Forsythe singled to centerfield for the RBI, 2-1. The Setters pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch. The Panthers trailed 3-1 when Trapani blasted a double to right center, scoring two to tie the game, 3-3. The game would remain tied as neither team allowed runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Pace freshman Jacequelyn Burd (Levittown, N.Y.) singled to right field in the top of the ninth to bring in the winning run for the Setters.
