Smithfield, R.I. - Second-seeded Adelphi broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Panthers defeated host Bryant University 5-3 during Friday's second round elimination game of the 2006 NCAA Division Northeast Regional. Adelphi (32-17) will advance to next face the loser of the UMass-Lowell/C.W. Post game on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Bryant ends its season with a 29-18 overall record after qualifying for the NCAA tournament for the third- straight season. The Panthers opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second when Amy Delmore belted a two-out double to left. Following a walk to Kristina LoCastro, Carla Buonviaggio dropped a single into center scoring Delmore. The Bulldogs would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the second. Kate Thomas led off the inning with a walk. After Jen Serrano lined a single to left, Lindsay Connor followed Serrano with an RBI single just past Adelphi first baseman Samantha Johnston to score Thomas with the tying run. The game would stay that way for the next four innings before the Panthers broke the game wide open in the seventh. Julie Schaper led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Schaper would score the eventual game-winner, scoring from second on a single to center by Jess Vogt. Schaper was able to avoid the tag by Bryant catcher Jordan Dargon after a strong throw from centerfielder Amanda Wilbur. Bryant would mount a seventh-inning rally, loading the bases with no outs. Vicci Duane hit a routine grounder to short but base runner Amanda Wilbur, running from second, was ruled out for interference. The Bulldogs would manage a run on a sacrifice fly and fielding error to round out the scoring 5-3 as Adelphi held on to advance. Courtesy Bryant |
