Adelphi vs. Bridgeport | New Haven vs. Dowling
Garden City, N.Y. - No. 5 seed the University of Bridgeport took advantage of an error in the first inning to score its only run in a 1-0 victory over No.4 seed Adelphi University in the first round of the NYCAC Softball Tournament. The Purple Knights improve to 22-16 and travel to Brookville, N.Y. to play No.1 C.W. Post at 3:30 p.m. The Panthers decline to play No.6 NYIT tomorrow, finishing their season, 25-16. Junior Kari Parr reached on a base hit in the top of the first, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Christina Joseph. She went to third on an Adelphi error before crossing the plate on a single by senior Correy Hansen. Although the Purple Knights managed four more hits, they were unable to score again. Senior Dawn Clasen pitched the one-hitter for UB, walking two and striking out three. No.2 Dowling College (31-18) defeated No. 3 the University of New Haven (27-14), 2-1, in the afternoon contest. The Chargers took 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as freshman Megan Brown scored on a passed ball. The Golden Lions knotted the score in the fifth inning with senior Jamie Crespolini driving home freshman Taras Wallace for the RBI. In the bottom of the seventh, Wallace brought in senior Jackie Legnon for the winning run. Rogers recorded the win for Dowling, allowing six hits, one run, one earned, walking one with no strikeouts. New Haven junior Elina Colon allowed just two hits, walking one and striking out two. Earlier in the day, New Haven defeated NYIT at C.W. Post before traveling to Adelphi to face Dowling. Dowling will now play the winner of the C.W. Post/Bridgeport contest on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Adelphi will not play NYIT in the loser's bracket, giving the Bears the automatic win to advance to the next round. NYIT will wait to face the loser of the Dowling/C.W. Post game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. |
