Borokville, N.Y. - Senior Kristina LoCastro belted a three-run homerun in the first inning to lift the #8 ranked Adelphi University softball team past Queens College, 6-3, in their first game of the East Coast Conference Tournament this afternoon. The Panthers (38-9) advance to the winners bracket and will face C.W. Post tomorrow at 12:00 noon. Queens College (20-24) got on first as Jay Henck scored on a double by Katie Karpinski, who later scored on a throwing error to make it a 2-0 game. The Panthers evened the score in the bottom of the inning. Junior Julie Schaper drove in the sophomore Samantha Johnston on a double Kristin Brennan. Sophomore Jessica Vogt tied the game on a single to score Schaper. LoCastro's homer accounted for the final three runs of the inning to push Adelphi ahead, 5-2. Each team added a run in the fourth with junior Dely Francisco crossing the plate to make it 6-3 when Brennan grounded out to third base. Schaper (19-5) pitched seven innings for eight hits, three runs, three earned, seven strikouts and one walk. In the second braket, #16 ranked C.W. Post (40-13) shut out Dowling College, 9-0, to advance to play Adelphi. Sophomore third baseman Shannon Kulnis went 2 for 3 at the plate with two home runs. Junior Samantha Yodowitz won her 26th game of the season as she pitched six scoreless innings, letting only three hits with five strikeouts. Click here to follow Adelphi versus C.W.
