Softball Holds Off Philadelphia For Non-Conference Sweep

Garden City, N.Y. - Junior Samantha Johnston went 6-8 with five runs scored and five RBI to lead the Adelphi University softball team to a 8-4, 10-7 sweep of Philadelphia University this afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers record their third straight 30+ season, improving to 31-16. The Lady Rams fall to 12-24.

The Panthers were also led offensively by senior Dely Francisco who was 6-8 with four runs and four RBI along with three stolen bases, and junior Angela Martin who was 4-for-5 with three runs scored.

Game One
Adelphi jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning with Francisco scoring first, followed by Johnston and sophomore Katie Brophy on a two RBI single by senior Diana DiPiano. PhilaU evened the score in the fourth on a three-run homer by Curtis. The Panthers rallied back with four runs in the fourth inning with Francisco, Johnston, DiPiano and Brophy each collecting an RBI, 7-3. Martin scored the final Adelphi run in the fifth as Curtis slammed her second homer of the day in the sixth inning to make it 8-4.

Senior Julie Schaper (16-2), who recorded her 50th career win, struck out three of four at-bats in the seventh inning to seal the win. She finished with three hits, four runs, three earned, two walks and 12 strikeouts. She also surpassed the 500 career strikeouts mark and is ranked first for Adelphi at Division II (since 1985) in both wins and strikeouts and second all-time.

Game Two
PhilaU got on board first, but Adelphi responded in the bottom of the first with two runs scored. The Panthers exploded with six runs in the second inning led by Francisco with a two RBI single. Two more runs followed in the fourth, including a RBI from sophomore pinch hitter Christine Robinson which pushed home Johnston. A three RBI triple by Rauco in the fifth put Philadelphia back in the game, 10-4. The Lady Rams continued their run in the sixth inning as they added three runs on four hits to close to within three, 10-7. However the rally ended there as neither team scored again with the Panthers holding on for the win.

Senior Samantha Tilton (6-2) recorded the win, facing 35 at-bats with 13 hits, seven runs, six earned, one walk and five strikeouts.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, April 22, as they take on Concordia College in Bronxville, New York beginning at 3:00 p.m.
