Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-1 and 11-5 in a conference doubleheader this afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers improve to 14-10 overall and 6-2 in the NYCAC while the Spartans drop to 5-10.

Adelphi was led offensively by freshman Jessica Vogt who tallied two homeruns in the doubleheader, going 2-for-7 with three RBI. Freshman Samantha Johnston and junior Alana daSilva each went 4-for-8 with a double and one RBI. Sophomore Dely Francisco was 4-for-6 with an RBI.

Game One
Tied at 1-1 the Panthers picked up three runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-run homer by Vogt which also brought in Franciso. Johnston doubled in the sixth, then advanced on an error before coming home on a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Samantha Tilton picked up the win, allowing one run, one earned, while striking out four batters.

Adelphi had five runs on 11 hits with one error. STAC had one run on eight hits with one error.

Game Two
The Panthers exploded with five runs on four hits to open the second game. Johnston singled, then stole second and came in on a double by freshman Diana DiPiano. DiPiano reached on a senior Carla Buonviaggio double, while sophomore Bailey Lawrence's triple with two outs accounted for the remaining runs. The Spartans rallied to tie the score helped by three doubles and a Panther error. Vogt put Adelphi ahead for good, collecting a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning as the Panthers went on to win 11-5.

Buonviaggio was the pitcher on record, allowing five runs, four earned, while walking four and striking out one.

Adelphi had 11 runs on 11 hits with three errors. STAC had five runs on five hits with no errors.

The Panthers are back in action this Sunday, hosting Caldwell College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at noon. Prior to the start of the contest, Adelphi will honor Janet L. Ficke Field beginning at 11:00 a.m. Ficke will throughout the first pitch.
