Doreen Clifford, formerly Doreen Lumbra, a 1990 Adelphi graduate, begins her ninth season as an assistant coach with the Panther softball program. Clifford was a four-year starter for the Panthers, was a member of the 1987,1988 and 1990 teams that went to the NCAA Division I Tournament. The 1988 team advanced to the finals. She was a first Team All-Northeast Region selection in 1990 and received second-team distinction in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Clifford started every game at second base in her four-year career and currently holds the all-time Adelphi record of 188 consecutive games played. She also holds the career records in runs scored (106), triples (18) and stolen bases (81). She finished her career second on the Adelphi all-time list in games played (188), at bats (608) and hits (168). Prior to her Adelphi career, Clifford was an All-State third baseman at Southington (Conn.) High School, leading the team to two state championships. For her accomplishments,Clifford was inducted into the Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame in March, 2000 and into the Adelphi University Hall of Fame in April, 2000. Clifford has received a Master of Sports Administration degree and health certification from Adelphi. She is currently teaching health education in the Bellmore-Merrick school district.
