Central Islip, N.Y. - The C.W. Post Pioneers came out on top of the 2008 East Coast Conference women’s soccer coaches’ preseason poll. Last season, the Pioneers (9-1 ECC) clinched the post season title and shared the regular season crown with the Bridgeport Purple Knights (9-1 ECC, 14-6-1 overall). The Purple Knights filled the #2 spot on the preseason poll. C.W. Post, making their first appearance since 2005, advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament to finish with a 17-1-3 overall record. Dowling, who earned their first NCAA berth last season, came in as the #3 pick. Junior forward Vanessa Moreira of Dowling College has been named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The ECC All-Conference First Teamer led the conference in points (52) and goals (21) and was third with 10 assists. Additionally, she earned a spot on the Daktronics All-Northeast Region First Team. Sophomore Anna Svensson of C.W. Post was selected as the 2008 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. An ECC All-Conference Second Team pick, Svensson started in all 21 games for the Pioneers.
