Garden City, N.Y. -
Adelphi University was one of 11 institutions in Division II that has earned Academic Squad honors as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). In addition, three student-athletes have earned Academic Honor Roll status for 2008.
Teams that have a collective GPA of 3.0 or greater earned the distinction of Academic Squad; the squads with the three highest team GPAs earned the honor of being named a Merit Squad. National Champion West Chester was named a Merit Squad, posting the highest team GPA in the nation. National runner-up C. W. Post and national semifinalist Adelphi both earned Academic Squad honors.
Adelphi seniors Jennifer Fucich and Caitlin Hilbert, along with junior Laura Bennett
were among the 45 Division II players recognized for excellence in the classroom. Players must have achieved at least junior year status and have a minimum GPA of 3.2.
"This is a tremendous honor for these young ladies to perform as well as they do in the classroom as on the field," Head Coach Joe Spallina said. "It's a testiment to their hardwork and dedication."
The Panthers (16-1) captured the East Coast Conference (ECC) regular season title en route to their fourth NCAA Final Four appearance in five years. Adelphi was also recognized by the NCAA at the championship tournament with having the highest (Fall) GPA amoung the four semi-finalist institutions.
