Manchester, N.H. - Freshman Michelle Ceraso (Massapequa, N.Y.) collected five of her game-high seven goals in the second half to lead the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to an 18-9 victory over Southern New Hampshire in its season opener this afternoon. The Panthers are 1-0, while the Penmen fall to 0-1. SNHU got on board first as Sherry Darrell scored just 1:11 into the game. Junior Rachel Ray (Rocky Point, N.Y.) tallied the first of her two goals in the 3rd minute on a feed by Ceraso to knot the score. This spurred a 5-0 Panther run as Ceraso scored twice with Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola, N.Y.) and Holly Burke (Churchville, Md.) also registering the first of their two goals in the game. The Penmen answered with back-to-back goals in 22nd and 26th minutes to make it a 5-3 game. Senior Megan Metelenis (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) snapped the run in the 27th minute on an assist from Ray, who recorded five in the contest. SNHU had the last word, scoring with 1:48 left in the half, 6-4. The Penmen continued their rally in the second half, opening on a 3-2 run to close to with one goal, 8-7, with 24:19 remaining. Ceraso's fifth goal of the day sparked a 6-0 Adelphi run capped by a free position goal by Nicole Lieberman (Wading River, N.Y.), 14-7, in the 48th minute. Southern New Hampshire managed two more goals in the final 10 minutes of play, but Adelphi added four more, extending its margin beyond reach. Sophomore Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y.) recorded the win with 14 saves. Katie Clark made nine stops for Southern New Hampshire. The Panthers continue their opening weekend road trip as they head to Worchester, Massachusetts to take on Assumption College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. |
