Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University bowling team has achieved a seventh ranking in the latest National Tenpins Coaches Association National Poll, it was announced Thursday. This is the highest the Panthers have been ranked in the program's history, besting their 11th-place ranking earlier in the season. Vanderbilt University of Nashville, TN remained as the top ranked team in the nation by the National Tenpins Coaches Association in its January national poll. Throughout the regular season, the NTCA conducts monthly national polls, which rank the Top-20 NCAA women's bowling teams. Thirteen out of a possible twenty coaches listed Vanderbilt (29-10) at the top of their ballot. The Commodores, who captured the UCM Greater Ozark Invitational and the UMES Hawks Classic during the Fall semester, have been idle since the last NTCA poll was released. VU will be back in action this weekend in Reading, PA when they attend the KU Golden Bear Invitational along with 27 other teams. Sixteen of the NTCA Top-20, including nine Top-10 teams, will be there. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore of Princess Anne, MD was ranked second, collecting four first place votes. UMES (66-18) is arguably the hottest team in the country. Since the last poll, the Hawks have gone 27-7 in NCAA matches and have won two tournaments, the 14-team A-State Mid-Winter Classic in Little Rock, AR and the 19-team Bowie State Invitational in Laurel, MD. The third place ranked team was Delaware State University of Dover, DE. The Hornets (56-14), recipients of three first place votes, won the MEAC Northern Division regular season championship and had a strong third place finish at the Mid-Winter Classic since the last poll. Moving up a notch to fourth place was Fairleigh Dickinson University of Teaneck, NJ. After an inconsistent first month, the Knights (37-16) seem to be turning things around, winning their last two tournaments, the 20-team Jeanette Lee Invitational in Richmond, VA and the 8-team SFC Terriers New Year Knock Down in Staten Island, NY. The University of Central Missouri of Warrensburg, MO climbed a couple of spots to fifth place. The Jennies (38-18) have kicked it into high gear recently, winning 21 of their last 24 matches, and taking home the second place trophy at the Mid-Winter Classic. Arkansas State University (48-21) of Jonesboro, AR was ranked sixth. Leaping four places to seventh place, its first ever Top-10 ranking, was Adelphi University (48-20) of Garden City, NY. Ranked eighth was the University of Nebraska (33-19) of Lincoln, NE. The ninth ranked squad was New Jersey City University (34-20) of Jersey City, NJ. Rounding out the Top-10 for the second straight poll was St. Francis College (39-16) of Brooklyn Heights, NY.
