Garden City, N.Y. - The Chargers of the University of New Haven have been chosen as the preseason favorites by a slim margin in the East Coast Conference women's basketball poll as voted upon by the conference coaches. Adelphi University has been selected fo finish third in conference play. New Haven earned 112 points including four first place votes edging second place C.W. Post which garnered 110 points, despite garnering six first place votes. Adelphi was 25 points off the pace in third with 85 points. New Haven posted a 25-6 overall record last season including a 17-3 mark in ECC play. C.W. Post went 18-12 overall and 15-5 in ECC play, while Adelphi was 16-14 overall and 14-6 in ECC action. The remainder of the field included Saint Thomas Aquinas College (80), the University of Bridgeport (78), Molly College (76), Dowling College (63), NYIT (47), Mercy College (40) which picked up the final first place vote, Queens College (24) and Concordia College (11). Adelphi senior forward Gianna Smith was the coaches' pick as preseason Player of the Year. Smith averaged 16.6 points and 7.1 rebounds last season on the way to earning first-team all-conference accolades. Joining Smith on the preseason all-conference first-team was Erica Bell of C.W. Post, Randi Bender and Kymira Woodberry of Molloy, and Erika Ostrove of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The all-conference preseason second-team included Mary Lepore of Adelphi, Jasmine Moore and Whitney Murrer of C.W. Post, Christina Baxter of Mercy, and Brianna Rende of New Haven. Adelphi will open the regular season on Thursday, November 15 when they play host to Bryant at 7:00 pm in Woodruff Hall.
