April 3, 2007 White Plains, N.Y. - Junior forward Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) was named All-Met Division II women's college basketball player of the year Tuesday by the National Invitation Tournament and the Met Basketball Writers Assn. The awards dinner will take place on Tuesday, April 10 at the Giants Stadium Club. Smith led the Panthers (16-14) with 16.6 ppg and 7.1 rpg, shooting 52.4 percent from the field with 40 steals. She notched her 1,000th career point on February 17 with a 28 point effort to help the Panthers defeat the University of Bridgeport. Her career total stands at 1100 points. Smith is a three-time ECC Baden Player of the Week and ranked third in the league in scoring, second in field goal percentage and eighth in rebounding. She is also ranked 33rd in the nation in field goal percentage. Carrie Seymour of Pace was selected coach of the year for the fourth time. She guided the Setters to the second round of the NCAA tournament and a 24-9 overall record. Joining Smith on the All-Met first team: Mackenzie Lynch, Caldwell; Ashley Wallace, Pace; Randi Bender, Molloy; Erika Ostrove, St.Thomas Aquinas; Erica Bell, C.W. Post. The All-Met second team comprised: Marissa Franklin, Bloomfield; Jackie Tracey-Spitaleri, Dominican; Stephanie Klingele, Pace; Liran Buchris, Pace; Kymira Woodberry, Molloy; Anette Johansen, NYIT. This is the third time Adelphi has been recognized with All-MET Player of the Year honors and the second in as many years. Alexis Seeley was the first in 2001 with Carlyshia Hurdle selected in 2006. |
