San Diego, CA - The Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Shaw University, 85-60, in day two of the Surf n' Slam Tournament at San Diego City College. The Panthers fall to 4-6 on the season. Junior Gianna Smith recovered from a season low three points in yesterday's contest versus Bentley College, registering 22 points along with a game-high 11 rebounds. Graduate student Dana Petersen was the only other player in double digits with ten points. The Panthers took an early 5-2 lead on a trifecta from Petersen, followed by a jumper from sophomore Lisa Manetta. The Bears kept things close as the lead flip-flopped with the game tying three times over the next eight minutes. Knotted at nine at 13:42, Adelphi rattled off nine unanswered points over the next two minutes, with Smith accounting for the final five. Shaw fought back, but three-pointers by junior Mary Lepore and Petersen kept Adelphi ahead, 26-19 with 6:22 remaining. Consecutive three-pointers by C. Harrell gave the Bears the spark they needed as they outscored the Panthers 18-4 over the final minutes to take the lead. Adelphi trailed 37-30 at the half. Shaw continued its streak in the second half, opening a 16 point lead through the 15:51 mark. Smith poured in five of the next seven Panther points to close the gap, 50-41, with 14:26 remaining. However this would prove to the be closest Adelphi would get as Shaw closed on a 35-19 run. The Bears shot 57.1 percent from the field in the second half. Both teams struggled with turnovers, with Adelphi accounting for 41 of the 73 committed in the game. The Panthers outrebounded the Bears, 39-33, but could not find their shot, hitting just 19-of-55 or 34.5 percent. Shaw had four players in double figures led by Harrell with a game-high 24 points. T McGaughey chipped in 16 points, five assists and six steals. The Panthers return to New York tomorrow and are off for the week before traveling to New Jersey next Saturday, Janauary 6, where they take on Caldwell College at 2:00 p.m. |
