Aug. 7, 2006 Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi University Athletic Director Robert Hartwell announced the hiring of Jason Akbar as head men and women's tennis coach on August 5, 2006. The men's team posted a record of 4-6 last year, while the women finished 7-7. A 2003 graduate of Adelphi and a 2001 graduate of Suffolk Community College, Akbar competed for the Adelphi men's tennis team from 2002-2003, making a trip to the NCAA Division II East Regional in 2003. In his two seasons, Akbar compiled a record of 9-6. Akbar also brings six years of tennis instruction to Adelphi, having coached youth players at Sportime in Kings Park, New York from 1999 through 2005. In addition, he competed and captained the team while at Suffolk Community College and participated in tennis before graduating from Smithtown High School. "I am very excited to be back with the Adelphi Tennis program," said Akbar. "It is an honor to take over the tennis program, and I look forward to guiding a talented team to a new level." The women's team opens the 2006 season on Friday, September 1 when they take on Holy Family at 4:00 pm in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. |
