Flushing, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's tennis team traveled to Queens College to compete in the ECC Flight Championship February 24-25. Three individuals and two doubles teams made it to the second round of competition. Nicolas Sanchez-Sousa (Bogota, Colombia) led the way for the Panthers advancing to the second round in both second flight singles and doubles. Sousa advanced past St. Thomas Aquinas' Christian Varas 6-0, 6-2 in the first round before being defeated by William Almeyda of Queens College. Sousa then joined Alex Molotsky (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) to defeat Arthur Hainline and Lucas Moraes, 8-5 in second flight doubles. Tomasz Walczak (Olesnica, Poland) advanced past Tony Tello, 6-0, 6-0, in first flight singles. Walczak was then defeated by eventual runner-up Gustavo Sanchez 6-3, 6-0. Queens senior Wojciech Stuchlik (Ledziny, Poland), the 2007 ECC Preseason Player of the Year, won at No. 1 singles defeating Gustavo Sanchez of Dowling, 6-4, 6-2, and he also teamed with junior Billy Almeyda to win the No. 1 doubles crown over Dowling's Sanchez and Jose Gomez, 8-2. Adelphi returns to action Friday, March 23rd against Queens at Hempstead Lake State Park. |
