Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi's senior Patrick Figueiredo has been named 2008 Atlantic Soccer Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive year; Longwood's goalkeeper Joel Helmick tabs Rookie of the Year while Adelphi's Carlo Acquista was honored as Coach of the Year in voting done by the league's coaches. Figueiredo, from Campinas, Brazil, repeats as Atlantic Soccer Conference Player of the Year, leading the Panthers with 13 goals and 27 points. He was named Atlantic Soccer Player of the Week three times this season. He is currently ranked eighth in the nation in goals per game (0.81) and 16th in points per game (1.69). Helmick, from Springfield, Virginia, posted a 5-6-3 overall record, 2-2 in the conference with a 1.54 goals against average for head coach Jon Atkinson. He recorded 63 saves while posting two shutouts. The freshman came up big for the Lancers in a 2-2 tie with #14 Virginia on October 21. He posted four saves in 110 minutes in front of the net. Adelphi's head coach Acquista was honored as Coach of the Year closing out the regular season with an 11-5-0 overall record and a perfect 4-0-0 record in the conference, claiming the top seed in the Atlantic Soccer Conference tournament. In addition Adelphi placed four players on the all-conference first-team and four players on the second team. John Koutsounadis, Kemalie Preston, Alex Kouxnetsov and Kevin Gluchowski earned firs-team honors, while Val Charalambous, Mark Hoffman, Mauricio Mora and Thorne Holder were second-team selections.
