Nov. 3, 2002 Boca Raton, Fl. - Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team was able to overcome an early deficit to come back and win against Adelphi University 3-2 Sunday afternoon. Early in the game Adelphi (4-11-1) was pushing hard against the FAU (7-7-2) defense, trying to force the foul. That strategy worked out in the 11th minute when Jeremi Isaacs fouled Jorrell Best just inside the box to give the Panthers a penalty kick. Anders Salomonsson's shot just inside the left post made the score 1-0. FAU would not back down though as six minutes later off of a wild throw in, Josh Garbee rifled a shot from 30 yards out to the upper left corner of the goal past Adelphi keeper Igor Yatsenko to tie the game at one apiece. A critical moment came in the 38th minute of play as Tom Cross fouled Oerjan Stroekness and drew a red card to put the Panthers down a man for the remainder of the game. The defense virtually shut down Adelphi's offensive attack in the first half as the Owls allowed only two shots in the first half with none attempted on goal. FAU came out blazing a minute into the second half when Kristoffer Aarskog picked up the ball amid commotion in the box and scored his first of two goals to take the lead 2-1. But the Panthers would not give up regardless of being a man down. Best would have his hand in another scoring opportunity in the 73rd minute as Padraiq Drew flew down the left sideline, made a nifty move around a FAU defensemen and crossed the ball to Best in the Box. Best would redirect the pass past a diving Anders Granstad to tie the game at 2-2 with 12 minutes remaining. FAU ralled back and only four minutes after the Panther goal, Aarskog blasted a shot from the top of the box that skidded across the surface and through the hands of Yatsenko. Granstad saved two shots after facing six on the afternoon. FAU led in corner kicks 5-4 and in total shots 20-6. Adelphi University returns to New York, traveling to host Columbia University on Wednesday, November 13. Kick off is at 3 p.m. |
