Oct. 25, 2002 Flushing, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's soccer team tied LIU 1-1, in the opening round of the Worldwide Classic at St. John's University. With the tie, the Panthers go to 4-8-1 overall. The Blackbirds are 7-4-1 In the 13th minute, the Panthers looked as if they would take an early lead when Sigurd Riksfjord was knocked down in the box by LIU senior Bereket Kidane and was awarded a penalty kick. Tal Sheinfeld's attempt was parried away by LIU goalkeeper Eric Masters to keep it scoreless. In the 20th minute, Adelphi had another outstanding chance, but Marlon McEachnie's header glanced off the far post. The Blackbirds almost grabbed the lead in the 34th minute when senior Oskar Tilly dribbled around the Adelphi defense, but his shot to the far post was batted away by goalkeeper Igor Yatsenko. In the 49th minute, Sheinfeld put the Panthers on top as he accepted a through ball from Nick Nowakowski and beat Masters from 15 yards out to the near post. The Blackbirds responded a little more than five minutes later when Tilley volleyed home consecutive passes by sophomores Matt Paradise and David Ledet for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. The contest remained evenly played. Panther forward Haruto Imamura collected a long ball in the closing seconds, but his shot from point-blank range was stopped by Masters to preserve the draw.
