Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi fell to #14 St. John's this afternoon in a one sided battle. With the loss Adelphi falls to 5-3-1 on the season, while the Red Storm improve to 6-3-1 overall. From the opening whistle St. John's went right at the Panthers and seemed to keep them on their heels most of the first half. Adelphi had one strong scoring opportunity in the opening minutes when Joseph Afful struck a ball that moved from left to right toward the goal. But Red Storm keeper Bill Gaudette made a diving save. St. John's came right back and opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Sebastian Alvardo-Ralph headed a cross past Adelphi's Tom Cunningham. The cross was delivered by Georgios Spanos. In the 37th minute the Red Storm struck again. This time the Johnnies passed the ball around Adelphi in the Panther penalty box. Eventually Sebastian Alvardo-Ralph collected a ball on the left flank and crossed it in the middle to a waiting Simone Salinno, who placed a ball into the Adelphi goal. The Panthers came out hard in the second half and the game was a little more evenly played. Adelphi's best chance came when Sigurd Riksfjord struck a ball off a corner that seemed to be heading into the Red Storm goal. But at the last minute a St. John's defender made an outstanding play to save a goal. St. John's closed out the scoring in the 81st minuted when Angel Rodriguez chipped a ball over the top of the Panther defense. Ryan Kelly got behind the Adelphi defense and collected the ball with only the goalie to beat. Kelly struck a volley that beat Cunningham and gave St. John's a 3-0 victory. Cunningham made eight saves in the loss, and Gaudette collected two saves and the victory for the Red Storm. Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, October 4th against conference for Philadelphia. Kick-off is at noon on Stiles Field. |
