Baltimore, MD - The Adelphi University men's soccer team wrapped up the UMBC Adidas Soccer Kick-Off Classic against the host Retrievers on Sunday, September 7. The Panthers trailed 2-1 late in the second half and forced overtime, but fell, 3-2. The loss drops Adelphi to 0-4, while UMBC improves to 3-1 overall. Both UMBC and Navy, also a 3-2 double overtime winner earlier over Lipscomb, finished the classic at 2-0. The Mids took the tournament title by outscoring UMBC, five goals to four in the two contests. UMBC got off to a strong start as John Paul Waraksa hooked in a shot past a Vincent Treglia from 24 yards away just 5:39 into the game. But just 22 seconds later, Adelphi's Chris Clarke was left unguarded in front of the goal and he routinely headed in Kemalie Preston's cross. The Retrievers struck back with exactly 14 minutes to play in the first half as Ime Umoh was taken down by Treglia as he was about to break in on goal, earning a penalty kick. Dan Bulls converted the penalty kick to give UMBC a 2-1 lead at intermission. The Panthers tied the score at 71:23, as Clarke placed his 28 yard shot beyond the reach of Retriever netminder Steve King and just inside the far left post. After tying the game in the latter stages of the second half, Adelphi had the better of the play in the overtime, but UMBC pulled out the win. Bulls had a shot at the win in the first overtime, forcing Panther netminder Vincent Treglia to make a diving save. In the second overtime, Dustin Dzwonkowski tracked down a ball in the left corner and sent a cross toward the goal mouth. Bulls managed to get to the ball first and got enough of it to redirect it into the goal, giving UMBC the overtime win. Adelphi outshot UMBC, 12-11, and each goalkeeper made three saves in the game. Kevin Gluchowski and Alexander Kouznetsov were both named to the all-tournament team for their play in the Adidas Kick-Off Classic. The Panthers return to action on Friday, September 12 when they host Sacred Heart at 8:00 pm in their home opener. |
