Dec. 19, 2005 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's lacrosse team had three players honored as Inside Lacrosse and Face-Off Magazine Division II Preseason All-Americans. Senior Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) is a first-team selection, while sophomore Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Brian Volpi (Lawrence, N.Y.) were both honorable mention selections. Green, a two-time All-American, was named the top attackman in Division II last year by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. This is also the third season in a row that Green has been a preseason All-America selection. Green finished the 2005 season with a team-leading 49 points and ranked second in the nation in goals per game (3.7) and fourth in points per game (4.9). He also led the Panthers in goals with 37 and tied for second in assists with 12. Gongas, in his first-year with the Panthers, saw action in five games at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst last season, scoring one goal and adding one assist. A four-year letterwinner at Comsewogue High School, Gongas was an honorable mention attack selection. Volpi, an honorable mention selection in goal, appeared in 11 games for the Panthers in 2004, compiling a record of 6-4. Volpi posted a goals against average of 7.79 and a save percentage of .518. The Panthers are also ranked sixth in the nation by Inside Lacrosse in their preseason coach's poll. Defending national champion NYIT was ranked first followed by Le Moyne, National Runner-up Limestone, C.W. Post, Mercyhurst and Adelphi.
Adelphi opens the season on February 26, 2006 when they play host to Notre Dame De Namur at 1:00 pm on Stiles Field. |
