Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's lacrosse team played host to Mercyhurst College on Saturday, May 5. The Panthers trailed by just one goal at halftime, 5-4, but were outscored, 10-3, in the second half of action, falling 15-7. The loss drops Adelphi's overall record to 5-8 and 1-5 in the East Coast Conference (ECC), while Mercyhurst improves to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Adelphi and Mercyhurst combined for just 12 shots in the first period of play and neither team was able to get on the board, entering the second quarter knotted at 0-0. The Panthers struck first in the second period, getting a goal from Marc Burton at the 13:35 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Mercyhurst responded with four straight goals over a seven minute span to take a 4-1 lead. The Panthers came right back, netting three goals in the next four minutes to knot the game at four apiece. Adelphi's last goal came with just 1:51 on the clock and seemed to secure a tie heading into halftime before Mercyhurst's Mike Bartlett found the back of the Adelphi goal with 26 ticks on the clock. Mercyhurst continued to roll in the third quarter of action scoring the first two goals of the second half and pushing their lead to 7-4 with 5:11 to play in the third. Michael Gongas netted his second goal of the game to pull the Panthers within two goals, but Mercyhurst answered back with eight straight goals to put the game out of reach. Gongas led the Panthers with three goals, while Burton scored two. Jason Fietta added a goal and an assist. |
