On July 18, 2007, Gordon Purdie '88 was named the sixth head lacrosse coach in Adelphi University history, replacing Sandy Kapatos. This season marks his fourth year as head coach.

Coach Purdie had his most successful season at the helm of the Panthers in 2010, guiding the squad to a 10-5 overall record. In their first season in the Northeast-10, Purdie led the Panthers to a 7-3 record in league play. The Brown and Gold ended the regular season on a six-game winning streak, earning them the third seed in the conference tournament. Adelphi defeated St. Anselm at home in the quarterfinals, 11-8, only to lose to seventh-ranked Merrimack in the semifinals, 14-3. Senior Kevin Kemp and sophomore Danny Blau received All-NE-10 First-Team honors, while junior Daniel Gill earned a second-team nod. Jeff Melsopp was named to the All-Rookie Team. Kemp also received ECAC Division II Men's Lacrosse All-Star First-Team honors, as well as being selected to play in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/LaxWorld North-South All-Star Game.

The 2009 season saw a 3-8 record, 1-5 in conference action. However, there were accolades that highlighted the season which included three players on the All-Conference teams. Eddie Ege defended his spot as statistical leader in assists in Division II while teammate Andrew Ashkenazy ranked second in the nation in face-off win percentage with 66.2 percent. Senior Donny Moss went on to be selected 39th overall in the MLL draft to the Long Island Lizards.

In the 2008 season, Purdie led the Panthers to a 7-5 overall record, 3-3 in ECC play. He was also named ECC Coach of the year while coaching three players to ECC All-Conference awards including Edward Ege, the ECC Player of the year. In addition, he also produced two All-Americans and NCAA Statistical Champions.

Purdie, a member of the Australian World Games team before arriving at Adelphi, made his mark as a two-time All-America selection. He played three years for the Panthers, from 1987-89, helping the team to two NCAA Division I Tournament appearances. He appears in numerous Adelphi DI records, including first in single-season ground balls (109) and second in career ground balls (269). He also appears in the top ten in single season and career assists and points.

His post-collegiate career includes playing seven times for the Australian Lacrosse World team. He also played for the New York Saints (1990-99), New Jersey Storm (2002-03) and the Anaheim Storm (2004), playing in over 100 professional indoor lacrosse games. In 1994 he was named Best Midfielder at the World Games. He has twice appeared in the ILF World Championships (2003, 2007) and was inducted into the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.

Purdie has coached at the Waldorf School in Garden City, N.Y. since 1994 and has coached numerous all-Americans and academic all-Americans and in 1997 was named the New York Metropolitan Lacrosse Association High School Coach of the Year.

Purdie currently resides with his wife Carol and son Gordon in East Rockaway, New York.
