Garden City, N.Y. - The Bears of NYIT have been chosen as the preseason favorites in the East Coast Conference men's basketball poll as voted upon by the conference coaches. Adelphi University has been selected to finish fourth overall. The Bears, coached by Sal Lagano, earned 11 points including six first place votes, edging second place Bridgeport, which garnered 108 points and three first place votes. C.W. Post rounded out the top three with 98 points and the final two first place votes, while Adelphi grabbed fourth place with 88 points. Adelphi is the defending ECC tournament champions, having won tournament titles in both 2006 and 2007. Last season the Panthers posted a record of 18-13 that included a trip to the NCAA Division II tournament. The remainder of the field is led by Molloy (70), New Haven (63), Saint Thomas Aquinas (57), Queens (49), Dowling (40), Concordia (33) and Mercy (14). NYIT junior guard Bryant Lassiter was the coaches pick as preseason Player of the Year. Lassiter averaged 17.8 points and 3.0 rebounds last season on the way to earning First Team All Conference accolades. Adelphi tips off the regular season on Friday, November 16 in the first round of the Dominican tournament when they take on Nyack at 6:00 pm.
