May 4, 2007 Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi University swim alumni came from far and wide to honor their former coach Bill Irwin and All-American Thomas Liotti '70 as they were each inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 19, 2007. Earlier that evening, a special swim reception was held to allow friends, alumni and current swim team members to meet and greet to meet with Irwin and Liotti. Irwin coached men's and women's swimming at Adelphi from 1966-1978. He coached several national championship qualifiers and All-Americans as well as two U.S. Olympic Trial participants, including fellow inductee, Liotti and current Hall of Famer Len Galluzi. He also coached 2006 Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Susan Tendy '70, a national championship qualifier as well. Liotti, a three-time All-American from 1968-70, set several school records during his time from 1968-70. In 1968, he earned N.A.I.A. All-American honors when he captured the 200 yard freestyle title. Liotti qualified for and competed in the United States Olympic Trials that same year. Due to overwhelming support from the alumni, an athletic scholarship has been established in honor of Irwin.
