New Brunswick, NJ - The Adelphi men's and women's swim team traveled to New Brunswick, New Jersey on Friday, February 17 to compete in the Metropolitan Swim Championships. The men improved on last year's placing by one, capturing eighth as a team, while the women placed 11th. The men captured eight top-10 places, four relays and four individual. The only Panther swimmer to place in the top-five was Matt Jordan (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who placed third overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.18 seconds. Teammate Benjamin Dellagiovanna (Forest Hills, N.Y.) narrowly missed a top-five showing, placing sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.49). The women secured 11th overall on the strength of eight top-10 finishes, including two top-five finishes by Jerri Lester (El Paso, Texas). Lester placed fifth overall in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.15) and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.98). The team also qualified six individuals and three relays for the ECAC Championships, which will be held at the University of Pittsburgh on February 23 through the 26th. Lester achieved the A standard or automatic entry in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke, she will also compete in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle by virtue of her B standard in those disciplines. Dellagiovanna managed the A standard in four events, the 100 and 200 yard backstroke and the 50 and 200 yard freestyle. Teammate Jordan will swim the 50 and 100-yard freestyle along with the 100-yard backstroke. Jordan achieved the A standard in the freestyle events and the B standard in the backstroke. Charlie Castillo (Wantagh, N.Y.), Brendan Berry (Bellerose, N.Y.) and Timmy Mueller (Merrick, N.Y.) all swam the B standard in their respective events. Castillo in the 100-yard breaststroke, Berry in the 1000-yard freestyle and Mueller in the 100-yard butterfly. The men will also be sending three relay teams to the ECAC Championships. The 200-yard freestyle relay, the 200, and 400-yard medley relays will all compete in Pittsburgh. |
