Adelphi Swimmers Qualify For ECAC and NCAA Championships at METS

East Rutherford, NJ - The Adelphi men's and women's swim teams traveled to Rutgers University to compete in the three-day Metropolitan Championship meet. The Panthers had a very successful weekend, qualifying four swimmers for the ECAC Championships that will take place in February 25-27 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The men's team finished ninth overall with a total of 142.5 points and qualified four different swimmers for the ECAC Championships. Freshman Charlie Castillo (Uniondale, N.Y.) led the way, achieving the ECAC "A" qualifier in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.02, which also placed him 4th overall. Castillo also swam the ECAC "A" mark in the 200 yard breaststroke by placing third overall in a time of 2:11.17.

Sophomore Matt Jordan (Valley Stream, N.Y.) also qualified for ECAC's with a time of 22.10 in the 50 yard freestyle, which earned him the "B" qualifier and a 13th place finish. Senior Teammate John Conciatori (Whitestone, N.Y.) swam to a time of 1:49.01 in the 200 yard freestyle to earn himself the "B" standard for ECAC's, while freshman Tim Mueller (Merrick, N.Y.) also earned a "B" qualifier with a swim of 55.42 in the 100 yard butterfly.

As a team the men qualified for the ECAC championships in the 200 yard medley relay. The men swam a time of 1:39.88 to earn sixth overall and the "A" mark for ECAC's.

The women, who placed ninth with a total of 157 points, were led by Jerri Lester (El Paso, Texas), who not only qualified for ECAC's but also qualified for NCAA's for the second straight year. Lester made the "A" cut for the ECAC Championships and the "B" cut for the NCAA Championships in both the 100 yard backstroke and the 200 yard backstroke. Lester placed second in both events with a time of 1:00.35 in the 100 and 2:09.8 in the 200.

Lester also made the ECAC "A" cut in the 50 yard freestyle within the Panthers ninth place 200 yard freestyle finish. Lester swam a 25.12 leg helping the team to a time of 1:43.32. Lester also earned the "B" mark in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 55.24 within another Panther relay.

Adelphi will return to action on Friday, February 25th when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to compete in the ECAC Championships.
