Golf Opens 2008 Season in Florida

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University golf team opens their spring season on Tuesday, March 4, at the three-day, 54-hole St. John's Treasure Coast Classic at the Indian Hills Golf Club in Fort Pierce, Florida. The Panthers begin the Spring season ranked second in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region poll released on February 26, by Golfstat.

Adelphi has three players ranked in the top-30 in the region among individuals. Led by junior Brant Kummerfeld (74.46 scoring average for thirteen rounds) is second, senior Jantzen Vargas (76.15 for thirteen rounds) is 13th, and freshman Matt Demeo (77.77 for thirteen rounds) is ranked 29th.

Bryant (305.54 scoring aggregate for thirteen rounds) is ranked first among teams, followed by Adelphi (304.31 for thirteen rounds), LeMoyne (311.58 for twelve rounds), St. Thomas Aquinas (304.31 for thirteen rounds) and Assumption (311.21 for fourteen rounds).

Robert Leopold (73.45 scoring average for eleven rounds) of Bentley is the top ranked player in the district, followed by Kummerfeld and Scott Congdon (75.08 for thirteen rounds) of Bryant.

Adelphi junior Joe Ostrowski (79.40 for five rounds) jumped 13 places and is now ranked 56th while junior Oliver Hudesman (79.54 for thirteen rounds) moved up seven spots and now sits 59th among the more than 150 individuals in the Northeast.

"We have made a committed effort in practice this winter and that commitment will carry us through the Spring," Head Coach Scott Allen stated.

The Panthers had five top-three finishes and six top-five showings in seven fall events, collecting a win at the Army tournament on October 2, 2007 and claiming the individual title, won by senior Mauricio Saavedra.

Following the St. John's tournament, Adelphi will return to action on March 31 and April 1 in the Goldey-Beacom College Invitational at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, PA.
