Littlestown, PA - The Adelphi University golf team finished fourth in the 13-team Mt. St. Mary's University Fall Classic, held at Quail Valley Country Club on Saturday, October 20, in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. The Panthers were led by junior Brant Kummerfeld (73-72 - 145), who finished in fourth place, and senior Jantzen Vargas (73-78 - 151), who finished in a tie for 17th place in a field of 69 individuals. Senior Mauricio Saavedra (75-77 - 152) finished in a tie for 24th place. Host Mt. St. Mary's (291-299 - 590) won the team competition by five strokes over Temple (293-302 - 595), which edged third-place Hofstra (296-300 - 596) by a stroke. Adelphi (299-305 - 604) finished fourth, the sixth top-five showing by the Panthers in seven fall events, followed by Long Island (306-300 -606), Fairfield (301-308 - 609), Rider (308-303 - 611) and St. Francis-PA. (302-312 - 614). Sean Davy of Hofstra (71-72 - 143) and Tyler Brewington of Rider (74-69 - 143) shared medalist honors. The Panthers also received strong showings from junior Oliver Hudesman (78-79 - 157) and freshman Matt Demeo (79-78 - 157), who both tied for 37th place, as well as senior Joe Ostrowski (77-82 - 159), who tied for 46th. Kummerfeld extended his run of top-ten finishes to six consecutive tournaments, and his fourth place finish on Saturday was his fourth top-five showing of the Fall. Vargas played despite battling an illness and made fifteen pars in shooting 78, while Saavedra had a roller coaster ride on Saturday, making several double bogeys but countering with five birdies. Adelphi will return to action on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at the St. John's University Treasure Coast Classic at Indian Hills Golf Club in Ft. Pierce, Florida. |
