West Point, N.Y. - The Adelphi University golf team won the 11-team Army Junior Mule Kicker Fall Classic on Tuesday, October 2 at the West Point Golf Course in West Point, New York. The Panthers (303) edged Nassau (306) by three strokes and third-place finisher Fairleigh Dickinson (312) by nine strokes. Monmouth (313) and Army (317) rounded out the top five. Adelphi junior Mauricio Saavedra rode three birdies to a share of medalist honors, shooting a four-over par round of 74 that tied him for first place in a field of 56 individuals. Saavedra finished tied with Joey Cave (74) of Army and Nic Zoretic (74) of USMMA. Adelphi placed four golfers in the top ten. Junior Brant Kummerfeld made four birdies en route to a 75 that garnered him a tie for fourth place, his third consecutive top five tournament showing this Fall. Senior Jantzen Vargas (77) and junior Oliver Hudesman (77) both finished in a tie for 8th place. Vargas ran his string of top-15 finishes to eleven, while Hudesman continued his improved play. Senior Joe Ostrowski (79) made his season debut, finishing in a tie for 17th place while freshman Matt Demeo (84) finished tied for 35th place. Playing as an individual, senior Craig Wiley (87) finished in a tie for 40th. Saavedra wnn is his first individual title at Adelphi, and the fourth individual title won by an Adelphi golfer in the last eleven tournaments. Saavedra overcame a four-over par start after three holes, playing his final fifteen holes in even-par to capture a share of the win. The Adelphi golf team returns to action on Sunday, October 7, in the Adelphi University Fall Invitational at Tallgrass Country Club in Shoreham, New York. |
