East Meadow, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's golf team posted its second sub-300 round of the year, shooting a 299 aggregate in a dual match with Nassau (290) on Saturday, April 21, at the par-72 Eisenhower Park White Course in East Meadow, New York. Medalist honors went to Jonathan Edwards of Nassau, who shot a five-under par round of 67. Junior Jantzen Vargas placed second with an even par round of 72. Vargas has finished first or second three times in his last four events and ends the regular season with nine consecutive sub-80 rounds and a 76.8 scoring average based on 16 events and 26 rounds. The Panthers also received an outstanding contribution from junior Joe Ostrowski, who carded his best score of the Spring, a one-over par round of 73 that featured 15 pars, a birdie and two bogeys. Senior Peter Alt turned in another solid performance with a four-over par round of 76, while juniors Mauricio Saavedra and Craig Wiley both shot 78. Adelphi will now wait to hear from the NCAA selection committee on Wednesday, April 25. Junior Jantzen Vargas, currently ranked #12 in the Northeast District, and junior Mauricio Saavedra, currently #38, are both considered candidates for selection as individuals to the NCAA Northeast Regional, held May 7-9 at the Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling, West Virginia. |
