Avondale, PA - The Adelphi University men's golf team finished in ninth place in the 19-team Goldey-Beacom College Spring Invitational on Tuesday. The Panthers were led by junior Jantzen Vargas (82-71 - 153), who earned his second top-ten of the year with a tie for eighth place in the 94-player field. The tournament was won by Indiana University (PA.) with rounds of 315-288 - 603. Millersville (313-296 - 609) was the runner-up and West Chester (320-302 - 622) came in third. Adelphi posted a two day total of 635 (317-318) to secure ninth place. Vargas' day-two round of 71 featured 15 pars and was highlighted by birdies on the second and fifth holes. Senior Peter Alt (79-86 - 165) played the last six holes of his first round in one-under par en route to a 79, making birdie on the 12th hole by hitting the flagstick with a seven-iron from 170 yards and then draining a 16-foot putt. Juniors Joe Ostrowski (76-82 - 158), Mauricio Saavedra (80-79 - 159) and Craig Wiley (88-89 - 177) also made key contributions for the Panthers. The tournament was conducted at the par-72 Hartefeld National Golf Course in Avondale, PA. The Panthers ninth place showing is the seventh top-ten finish this season for Adelphi. Adelphi returns to action on April 1-2 at the Dowling College Peter King Memorial Golf Tournament at the Long Island National Golf Course in Riverhead, New York. |
