Fort Pierce, FL - The Adelphi University men's golf team competed in the three-day St. John's University Treasure Coast Classic in the par-71 Indian Hills Golf Club in Fort Pierce, Florida on March 7-9. The Panthers shot a three-day aggregate score of 912 to finish in 11th place, while host St. John's University (269-274-269 - 812) won the three-day event, nine strokes ahead of Florida Atlantic University (270-276-275 - 821) and twenty strokes in front of third-place Evansville (274-282-276 - 832). Mauricio Saavedra opened the season in fine form, recording five birdies and reaching as low as two-under par on the first day. Adelphi also received solid contributions from junior Joe Ostrowski, who carded a 74 while playing his last 17 holes in one-over par, and junior Jantzen Vargas, who rallied from seven-over par to play his final five holes in three-under en route to a 75. Adelphi sat in second place after day two with an aggregate score of 616. Vargas shot a one-over par 72 and was tied for 46th place (75-72-147) in the 70-player field after collecting seven birdies. Saavedra carded a five-over 76 and was also tied for 46th (71-76-147). Ostrowski (74-81-155) and senior Peter Alt (85-82-167) rounded out the scoring for the Panthers. On the third and final day the Panthers (305-311-296 - 912) were led by Saavedra (71-76-70 - 217), who challenged the Adelphi school record of 69, narrowly missing birdie putts on the 16th and 18th holes before posting the team's first sub-par round of the year - a one-under par 70 - and finishing in a tie for 44th place in the 70-player field. St. John's junior Keegan Bradley (63-65-64 - 192) finished in first place among individuals, eight strokes better than Kyle Morris of Seton Hall (70-63-67 - 200) and Jason Parajeckas of UConn (67-70-63 - 200). Vargas (75-72-76 - 223) finished in a tie for 57th place. Ostrowski (74-81-78 - 233) and Alt (85-82-72 - 239) rounded out the scoring for the Panthers. Alt's one-over par round of 72 on Friday represents his best round at Adelphi. Adelphi returns to action on March 16-17 at the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spring Invitational at Rum Pointe GC in Ocean City, MD. |
