Fort Pierce, FL - The Adelphi University golf team, wearing orange ribbons to honor late teammate Mauricio Saavedra, set two school records and finished in sixth place at the three-day, 54-hole St. John's University Treasure Coast Classic. The tournament concluded on Thursday, March 6 at the Indian Hills Golf Club in Fort Pierce, Florida. Junior Brant Kummerfeld birdied the 15th hole to get to three under-par for the day and then ran off three pars, shooting a 68, establishing a new Adelphi record for an individual round. The Panthers added three sub-75 scores to Kummerfeld's 68 to shoot a 289 aggregate, setting another school record. Kummerfeld's three-day one over-par total (71-75-68 - 214) landed him in a tie for 16th place. Freshman Matt Demeo (77-74-73 - 151) had an impressive tournament, finishing in a tie for 37th place. Bethune-Cookman's three-day 31-under par score (280-271-270 - 821) was good for a 22-stroke win over second-place Florida Gulf Coast (286-284-273 - 843). Boston College (285-285-277 - 847), Toledo (296-285-282 - 863) and Evansville (299-289-281 - 869) rounded out the top five, followed by Adelphi (298-299-289 - 886) and Creighton (295-304-289 - 888). Willie Mack of Bethune-Cookman shot a three-day ten-under par score (69-68-66 - 203) to edge teammate Carl Corbin (71-66-67 - 204) by a stroke to win medalist honors among individuals. Senior Jantzen Vargas (72-77-76 - 225) and junior Oliver Hudesman (78-73-74 - 225) both had a solid tournament and finished in a tie for 42nd place. The Panthers also received a strong contribution from senior Joe Ostrowski (82-79-74 - 235), who finished in 46th place. Kummerfeld's pedestrian round of five birdies and 11 pars, broke the previous Adelphi individual record of 69, set by Kevin Loftus in April, 2001. The junior from Wyoming made clutch par saves on the 17th hole with a two-putt from 60 feet and on the 18th with a wedge from 80 yards to 12 feet. The Panthers aggregate score of 289 broke the previous school mark of 291, established last October by the Brown and Gold at the ECAC Championship. "It was exciting to compete with ACC, Missouri Valley and MAC schools," Head Coach Scott Allen noted. "The team did themselves proud. Also to establish new team and individual marks on the day we honored Mauricio is a fitting accomplishment and an appropriate tribute to him and his family." Adelphi returns to action on March 31 and April 1 in the Goldey-Beacom College Invitational at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, PA. |
