Fort Pierce, FL - The Adelphi University golf team is in sixth place after day one of the three-day, 54-hole St. John's University Treasure Coast Classic, held at Indian Hills Golf Club in Fort Pierce, Florida. The Panthers were led by junior Brant Kummerfeld (71), who is in a tie for eighth place, and senior Jantzen Vargas (72), who is in a tie for 13th place. Freshman Matt Demeo (77) is currently in a tie for 44th place. Bethune-Cookman shot a four-under par 280 to take the day one lead, five strokes ahead of second-place Boston College (285). Florida Gulf Coast (286), Creighton (295) and Toledo (296) round out the top five, followed by Adelphi (298) and Evansville (299). Jan Prokop of Boston College, John Sutko of Creighton and Chris Covelli of Florida Gulf Coast each shot three-under par rounds of 68 to share the individual lead. Kummerfeld was five-over par through four holes, but rebounded, playing his last 15 holes in five-under par en route to an even par 71. The junior holed a 60-yard wedge shot on the sixth hole and made five birdies over the following 13 holes. Vargas fought off a double bogey on the 13th hole, his tee shot hit a cart path and rocketed out of bounds, with two birdies over his final five holes to salvage a one-over par 72. Junior Oliver Hudesman and Senior Joe Ostrowski also played well, posting scores of 78 and 82.
