Adelphi University
Adelphi University was the first liberal arts institution of higher education on Long Island. Chartered in 1896 by the New York State Board of Regents, Adelphi University has kept as its central mission a commitment to transmitting knowledge, transforming minds, and empowering students to thrive in their lives and their professions.

Over 3,300 undergraduate students presently pursue degrees in Adelphi's 60 undergraduate programs, with a ratio of students to faculty of 14-to-1. Eight schools serve Adelphi students: the College of Arts and Sciences; the Honors College; University College; the schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work; and the Derner Institute of Pschyology. Adelphi undergraduates emerge with excellent scholarly training for graduate study and practical preparation for careers in the arts and sciences, business, medicine, law, education, nursing, psychology, and social work.

Student Life
Adelphi students are active members of campus life, with more than 55 student-clubs, honor societies, Greek societies, and community service organizations. Each semester frequent trips to New York City and local museums, concert halls, and Broadway productions are scheduled. Being so close to Manhattan, Adelphi attracts to campus some of the top names in business, politics, and the arts, creating a rich series of cultural events. Recent appearances on campus include Rudy Crew, Ben Vereen, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Mikhail Gorbachev. Students take a break between classes in the newly renovated and filled to capacity residence halls, or in the recently opened Commuter Student Lounge.

Scholarships and Financial Aid
Adelphi is committed to rewarding students who have demonstrated achievement in their academic performance, athletics, dance, drama, fine arts, music, communications, and community service. Adelphi recently announced a new scholarship program for all high schools in Nassau County, which is described in literature available in the guidance offices. Over 88 percent of Adelphi freshmen receive some form of institutional aid. In addition to merit based awards, students may be eligible for a financial assistance package based on need. Adelphi's 2000 freshman class was the largest in five years, with more than 630 freshmen entering the University. Average SAT scores and grade-point averages have risen as well. With a diverse student body, recruited from 40 states and over 50 countries, Adelphi provides a cosmopolitan atmosphere conducive to intellectual questioning and growth.

Special Programs
The Adelphi University Honors College offers the highly motivated student the opportunity to study in small, interdisciplinary seminars that study great ideas, accomplishments, and inventions. What the students enjoy most is the seminar setting, a small group of students engaged in an informal discussion with a leading professor. In 1997, the Honors College was recognized by the Templeton Foundation at the United States Senate for its example of the best in American Higher Education. Significant academic scholarships are awarded to students admitted to the program. Now in its 22nd year, the Adelphi University Learning Disabilites Program offers individualized programs and a rigorous academic curriculum to students with learning disabilities. The nationally recognized program is an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing skills and strategies taught by learning specialists in individual tutorials and confidential, individual counseling provided by clinical social workers. The Adelphi University General Studies Program is an avenue to higher education for graduating high school students whose records would normally deny them admission to a distinctive college, but have been identified as having potential for real academic achievement. The program is a one-year program integrating a rigorous, non-remedial freshman year curriculum with individualized counseling and tutoring. The program features small classes and careful monitoring of each student's progress. Upon completion of the students' first year in general studies, they move into the second academic year in the major of their choice.

Technology and Education in the 21st Century
A coordinated campus-wide technological expansion has flourished over the last two years at Adelphi. Students benefit from an entirely upgraded campus network, state-of-the-art Web-capable smart classrooms, plug-in stations to the high speed campus network for student notebook computers, a multitude of computer work stations. Full research and technical support services are available in the Swirbul Library, bringing research and technological support systems together where students need them most.
