Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

About SAAC
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee is a board made up of student athletes who are committed to generating a voice for the student-athlete within the NCAA. One of the main purposes for SAAC is to make other student-athletes aware of proposed NCAA legislation and to recommend legislation to the NCAA regarding certain situations. SAAC is dedicated to promoting a positive student-athlete image within the athletic programs and creating the executive leaders of tomorrow.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the NCAA and Adelphi University's SAAC is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.

Committee Goals:

  • Become a mediator between student-athlete and coaches
  • Create a strong bond and promote communication between student-athletes and the university
  • Build a sense of community within each athletic team
  • Develop true student-athlete leaders and improve his or her involvement within the community.

During the 2007-2008 school year, SAAC has been very active. They have participated in and coordinated the following events:

  • Cans for Cancer- SAAC and the Athletic Department continue to support and run the Cans for Cancer recycling program on campus. The proceeds that are collected are donated to children with cancer within the Winthrop Cancer Center for Kids and cancer research. The University Athletic Department has presented Winthrop University Hospital with over $14 000 for the recycled cans that have been collected on campus over the past 3 years.
On Monday February 11, 2008 members of the Adelphi University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C) and CHAMPS/Life Skills program met with Linda Sweeney and other representatives from Winthrop University Hospital to present a check for over $7 000 from last year's Cans for Cancer Program collection.

  • Cans for Cancer collection at Nassau coliseum- Beginning in the month of February, four student-athletes started volunteering at each NY Islanders home game to collect cans to benefit the Cans for Cancer program at Winthrop University Hospital.
On Friday, March 28, 2008 several student-athletes visited Winthrop University Hospital to play with the children currently diagnosed with cancer. The athletes brought three dozen Black Panther stuffed animals to give out to the patients at the hospital.

  • Make-A-Wish Foundation- SAAC continues to collaborate with the NCAA and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraising campaign has been identified as part of the Division II strategic plan. Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of the children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation mission reflects the life changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities. This year our Student-Athletes raised and donated $1 000 to the organizations. Division II notes: Upon review, Make-A-Wish tops $300,000.Click Here

  • Salvation Army- On Sunday December 16th 2007, the Adelphi University CHAMPS/Life Skills program sponsored an event at the Salvation Army in Hempstead, NY. Student-athlete volunteers spent several hours working to set up for the Salvation Army's Annual Toy Workshop which expected to host 400 families who visited the Salvation Army before Christmas. Over the course of two days, parents were able to pick out three gifts for their children as well as two stocking stuffers. The Salvation Army has run to the Toy Workshop for more than 30 years. This year, over 1 500 children in the Hempstead area received some help during the holiday season thanks to donations of area residents and Adelphi University Athletics.

  • Adelphi Student Athletes Volunteer in the Classroom- The goal of "Parents as Reading Partners" (PARP) is to reinforce the concept that education and learning should be significant throughout student lives. With this year's theme, Old Mills Road Elementary School wanted to demonstrate that college and professional athletes as well as media representatives are actively sending this same important message about education. To do this they used student-athletes as role models for the students.
For the second consecutive year, Adelphi University student-athletes traveled to Old Mills Road Elementary School to read to children as part of the PTA sponsored PARP Program. Members of the Adelphi University CHAMPS/Lifeskills program were invited to participate in the guest reader week at the school, which took place from February 11-15. The volunteers came not only to represent their school and team, but to spend some time in the classroom reading to the children. In total 15 student-athletes spent an hour reading to children in various classrooms.

During the SAAC Meetings
During the Monday night meetings at 8:30 pm in the Campbell Lounge, room 1 and 2, many issues regarding the school, teams, coaches, equipment, event staff, team problems, solutions, fundraising, community service ideas, volunteer projects and team updates are discussed. It is a good time for all the teams to stay connected and updated on what is going on with their teams, outside their teams, and other teams. We are here for our student-athletes to voice their ideas and opinions as well. It is extremely important to get your athletes involved because we are making great strides in the right direction and to a brighter future. We need the support of you and your team to make this year and years to follow a success.
