Adelphi Board of Trustees Honors Spring 2017 Northeast-10 Champions

Garden City, N.Y. - On Monday, September 18, student-athletes of the spring sports that won Northeast-10 championship titles were honored by the Adelphi University Board of Trustees in a small ceremony in the ballroom of the University Center. Representatives from women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse, softball, and track and field were presented resolutions indicating the successful seasons of each program by President Dr. Christine Riordan and Board of Trustees Chairman Ron Lee.

Victoria Major was the lone NE10 individual champion hailing from the track and field program, however three of her teammates joined her to be honored after earning United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region accolades. Eight athletes in all were named All-Region as Patrick Sheehan, Michael Grady and Aleisha Jeffers were present for the ceremony. Major won the high jump at the NE10 Championships, helping her team to a program best fourth place finish. She went on the NCAA Outdoor Championships where she posted a podium-finish to earn USTFCCCA First Team All-American honors. Both the men's and women's team were honored as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams and two individuals (Major and Nicole Elarde) earned All-Academic honors. Elarde and Emily Hagarty wrapped up season with CoSIDA Academic All-District nods.

"We take so much pride in representing Adelphi and, of course, in trying to win championships as a team or as individuals, and in always being prepared to achieve at the highest level in the classroom," commented Head Coach Katie Rees. "We truly appreciate the Board and President Riordan for recognizing all of our accomplishments, and we look forward to another year of success ahead."

The softball program won the program's first NE10 tournament championship for the first time in four years (won first in 2013), and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional for the third consecutive season. The Panthers finished the 2017 campaign at 38-15-1, marking the program's fifth year of 30 or more wins since 2012 to finish the season ranked inside the national top 20. Brenna Martini repeated as an NFCA All-American and added to her resume by doubling her CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades. She also became the program's career home run leader and was recognized again as NE10 Player of the Year. Lindsay Mapes was tabbed the conference Pitcher of the Year as eight players in total were named All-Conference.

"It was an honor to be recognized by the Board of Trustees for not only our athletic accomplishments, but for our academic excellence and our strength of character," commented Head Coach Bree Nasti. "The reception was a great reminder of Adelphi's proud sense of community and a wonderful way for our student-athletes to share our successes with a group of enthusiastic and supportive board members. "

Men's lacrosse was recognized as NE10 regular season champions, advancing through the NCAA tournament to the Division II National Semifinals. The Brown and Gold concluded the season at 15-4 overall. Seven athletes were named United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-Americans with Brendan McDougal and Nick Reisig taking home top honors as Most Outstanding Goalie in Division II and Specialty Player Award (Short Stick), respectively. Reisig continued to rake in awards as he was also announced USILA Scholar All-American. McDougal was also tabbed NE10 Goalkeeper of the Year as Head Coach Gordon Purdie headlined as Coach of the Year, with eight athletes in total being recognized by the conference.

Women's lacrosse won the program's eighth NCAA Division II National Championship and fourth consecutive NE10 Championship in 2017 finishing off the season at 21-1 with a nine-game win streak. The lone loss to Le Moyne in regular season was avenged in the conference title game and then again in the national semifinals. Jacqueline Jahelka became the Panthers all-time leading scorer and doubled her CoSIDA Academic-All-American award and also repeated as Division II/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Attacker of the Year. Senior Ryley Weber was honored as an IWLCA All-American and as the Defensive Player of the Year as four other teammates earned the All-American nod as well. Nine players were recognized by the conference and Head Coach Pat McCabe was chosen as the IWLCA Division II Coach of the Year. The team also got it done in the classroom, posting a team GPA of above 3.0 to earn the title of IWLCA Academic Honor Squad.
