Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's lacrosse program won its ninth straight contest Tuesday evening with a 19-10 victory against No. 13 Pace University. Two members of the Brown and Gold posted six-point performances and three others scored hat tricks in the win.
The Panthers (9-0, 6-0 NE10) were led by rookie
Kole Pollock, who accounted for six points behind four goals and two assists, as teammate
Michele Scannell also had a six-point night with a hat trick and three assists of her own.
Kate Beier,
Alison Johnson, and
Casey Zalewski each registered a hat trick and combined for four assists and three ground balls. On the other side of the field, Ryley Weber and
Shea Weber put up identical stat lines as they each collected three ground balls, caused two turnovers apiece and each won five draw controls. For the Setters (7-2, 5-1 NE10) Casey Gelderman posted a team-high five goals in the decision.
Adelphi took a quick 2-0 lead in the game, less than four minutes into the contest, but the home team managed to cut that lead in half responding with a goal at the 23:42 mark. The Panthers pulled away with two more goals over the following three minutes before the Setters netted another goal, to be down by two. Both teams were plagued with turnovers and fouls over the next 13 minutes, until the visitors managed to put up back-to-back goals to regain momentum.
At the half, the Brown and Gold held an advantage in the score and several statistical categories, including being a perfect 6-6 in clears and a 15-12 shots advantage. The Setters only held the upper hand in free position shots (5-2) of which they converted into one goal in the opening frame.
Zalewski netted her first of the contest to open the second half, but the home team responded with four unanswered goals to come within two of the Panthers. The teams traded goals to keep within two of each other, however the Adelphi offense got hot, taking the next nine minutes to score seven consecutive goals. The home team was awarded several free position attempts however they took no shots, as the visiting team caused five turnovers in that time.
Gelderman scored one final time for the Setters, but AU's Johnson got in the last goal to make it a nine-goal lead as time expired. In goal for Adelphi,
Hailey Peterson improves to 9-0 this season, picking up eight saves in the win.
Adelphi women's lacrosse returns to their home field on Saturday, April 8 when they host Merrimack College in a 1:00 p.m. Northeast 10 contest.
