Bridgeport, Conn. - The last time Adelphi men's basketball scored 100+ points was in a 101-91 Northeast-10 Quarterfinal win at the end of 2017.
With a 10-point advantage heading into the locker room at halftime, the Panthers (1-0) never looked back en route to a 109-82 win over Post University (0-1) at the UB Men's Basketball Crossover Classic Saturday evening.
Tavon Ginyard was one of six players to reach double-figures, finishing the contest with 19, as he nearly missed a triple-double in the season opener with eight assists and seven rebounds.
Terrel Martin-Garcia completed his first game in a Panther uniform with 17 points behind 5-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Austin Beech,
Michael Coffey, and Doug Chappell finished one behind the next, notching 15, 14, and 13 points, respectively. Accounting for the only double-double of the night was
Conor McGuinness, who was 7-7 at the free throw line with 12 points, adding 15 assists in the win.
An eight-point run for the Eagles had Post out to a manageable lead early in the first half, but Adelphi was able to match those points with the help of Coffey and
Jack Laffey to bring the contest even at 14-all. With 6:45 left on the clock the teams were locked once more, but the Panthers were able to spark a run over the remaining minutes to hold a 10-point lead at the half.
The Brown and Gold held the upper hand in several categories, including an instrumental 52-21 advantage in bench points with 20 coming in the first frame alone. The acting home team pushed their lead to double-figures - and kept it there- at the 18:21 mark with the help of a layup from Beech. A three from Martin-Garcia pushed the 20-point lead threshold, a number the Panthers were able to maintain for the remaining of the non-conference tilt. Their largest lead of the half came with 4:12 on the clock, when Chappell recorded a quick lay-in to put AU up by 32.
The Eagles scored eight unanswered points with under four minutes to play, but the deficit was too great to overcome as Daveyon Barnes knocked down a three-pointer to secure the season opening victory.
Adelphi has a quick turnaround and is back in action on Sunday, November 12 when they take on host Bridgeport on day two of the Crossover Classic at 6:00 p.m.
