Providence, R.I. – For the third time in the past four years, Adelphi University claimed the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup, as Danny McCabe, Director of Athletics & Campus Recreation, accepted the 2015-16 award on Monday night during the conference's year-end banquet at the Providence Hilton.
The Presidents' Cup is presented annually to signify overall athletic excellence in the Northeast-10 Conference. The honor is awarded to the institution that compiles the most cumulative points based on finishes in the regular season standings from all of its programs competing in league championships. Points for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, and men's golf are awarded based on placement in those sports' respective conference championships.
Also on hand for the acceptance of the award were Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA Kate Whalen, Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Bob Perez, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Mike Gavagan, head women's soccer coach Brooke DeRosa and Elizabeth Mercuri and Spenser Powell, who represented Adelphi's student-athletes and will be members of the 2016-17 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) executive board.
"Congratulations to all the student-athletes, coaches and administrators at Adelphi University on claiming the Presidents' Cup," said Northeast-10 Commissioner Julie Ruppert. "It is a tremendous accomplishment to have such success in a 15-team league as competitive as the Northeast-10. To earn this honor requires tremendous dedication and commitment from the entire campus community, and the entire Adelphi family should share in the celebration of this accomplishment."
Adelphi jumped into the top spot of the Presidents' Cup standings after sitting in second place following the winter season. With 71 points in the spring, the Brown and Gold jumped the Bentley University Falcons and regained the top spot -- having also held the lead after the fall season. The Panthers accumulated 89 points in the fall season and finished the year with 194 points, 18 points ahead of runner-up Bentley.
This past year, Adelphi claimed NE-10 Championships in women's tennis, volleyball, women's soccer, and women's lacrosse. The department also shared and/or won regular season titles in women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball, women's tennis, softball, baseball and women's lacrosse.
During the spring season, the women's lacrosse team finished with a 21-1 overall record and finished as the NCAA Division II Runner-Up, while, the softball program won its second consecutive East Region crown to earn a trip to the College World Series, winning the opening game of the tournament.
Also taking home hardware back to Garden City is Taylor Groth, recently-graduated senior of the women's soccer program. The NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Groth put together a 3.933 GPA as a psychology major to earn NE-10 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, she collected All-America honors from both the CCA and NSCAA this fall while helping DeRosa's program win its first-ever NE-10 Championship. Finally, Molly Cuevas was named a finalist for the NE-10's Woman of the Year award, which was won by Maggie Monnat of the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team.
The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 15 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country in terms of sport sponsorship. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
