Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to Pleasantville, New York on Friday, October 7 and fell behind Pace University early before rallying and coming up short, 3-1 (20-25, 12-25, 25-16, 23-25). The loss drops Adelphi to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Setters improve to 13-4 and 1-2 in conference.
Melissa Rigo and
Mandy Stanislovaitis paced the offensive effort with 13 and 10 kills respectively, while
Megan Manierski and Rigo both notched 14 digs and
Sierra Crook was credited with 13. Manierski had a team-high 23 set assists and the defensive side of the net was patrolled by
Madison Canestrari and
Amanda Borges, who combined for 11 block assists.
Adelphi jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first set and continued to lead 12-11, but the hosts went on a quick 4-0 spurt, capped by a Panther attack error to give the Setters a 15-12 lead. From there, Pace scored 10 of the next 18 points to secure a 25-20 game one victory. The hosts turned the tables on Adelphi in the second set, streaking out to a 9-2 lead and pushed their margin to 14 points, leading 20-6. A host service error sparked the Brown and Gold, who scored six of the next 10 points before running out of time, taking a second set loss, 25-12.
The third game was tied at six, when back-to-back Setter attack errors ignited a 9-2 Panther run that put Adelphi in complete control of the set, 15-8. The Brown and Gold took their largest lead of the game, 21-12 on a Crook service ace, cruising to a 25-16 win. The fourth set was tight early and was tied at 10 on a Manierski kill. However, the Setters put the pressure on Adelphi with a 6-2 spurt, 16-12. The Panthers rallied, tying the contest at 22 on a Rigo kill and at 23 on a Borges' effort. Unfortunately, time ran out for Adelphi as the hosts earned two straight points to close out the game, 25-23 and the match, 3-1.Â
