2012-13 Year in Review

Women's Soccer Team Shot
Women's Soccer (11-7-3, 6-6-3 NE-10; NE-10 Runner-Up)

The women's soccer team concluded their season with an 11-7-3 overall record which marks the first time in four years that the program won more than 10 games. Additionally, they stunned the Northeast-10 by making it to the conference championship game, the first in school history, after being picked to finish eighth in the Pre-season Coaches' Poll.
 
The Panthers began the season on a hot streak, winning their first three contests and outscoring their opponents an impressive 12-0. They dove into conference play and picked up a notable win against the then #23 UMass Lowell Riverhawks at home, 4-0. Finishing the regular season with a mark of 6-6-3, the Brown and Gold were awarded the #8 seed in the Conference Championship.
 
Pitted against the top seeded, and #10 ranked team in the country, Chris Armas and his squad stunned the Yellow Jackets of American International College in a 2-0 thriller. They made it past fourth seeded Merrimack courtesy of a 1-0 game and earned their first championship history since joining the conference in 2009 but fell by way of a 1-0 loss to the third seeded Penmen of Southern New Hampshire.
 
Masiello earned a spot on the All-Tournament team while Whitney joined her and added her second All-Conference nod in as many years. Taylor Groth was also honored with All-Conference accolades and joined Taylor Salmon on the All-Rookie squad as well. For success in the classroom, 24 players were selected to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Men's Soccer (3-13)
In their final year in Division I, the men's soccer team closed out the season on a high note with a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology in front of the home crowd to cap a down year.
 
The Panthers began the season in a four-game hole, dropping the first two contests by 1-0 scores. They finally broke the streak in dramatic fashion by way of a 1-0 double overtime victory over UMass on September 8.

They then slipped into an eight game skid, falling in three of them by just a single goal. The squad bounced back on October 17 when they played host to the Tigers of Princeton and defeated the Ivy League opponent 1-0.
 
When all was said and done, the Panthers closed the books on their Division I status with a three win season. Senior forward, Omar Edwards was the Panthers' leading point scorer with seven on the strength of three goals and one assist while junior Nicholas Costa was second with two goals and one assist for five points. James Diana and Chris Joseph each tallied two goals apiece on the year while Steve Rivera closed out his career with three assists.
 
Cross Country (NE-10 Championships; M-5th, W-2nd | NCAA East Regional; M-6th, W-2nd | NCAA Championships; Coelho-30th, W-26th)

Both the men's and women's cross country teams enjoyed tremendous success this year, highlighted by accomplishments on the conference, regional and national levels.

 
For the men, they finished fifth at the NE-10 Championships, 6th at the NCAA East Regional, and sent one runner to the NCAA Championships in Andrew Coelho. The senior placed sixth at the Conference Championship, fourth at the Regional and 30th at the National Meet and earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-American honors in the process.
 
The women had a season for the record books, marking their highest place on the conference, regional and national stages in recent years. Garnering a national rank of as high as #29, the Panthers placed second at the NE-10 Championships on the strength of four All-Conference performers in Elizabeth Eickelberg, Larissa Melendez, Jacqueline Kaste and Jennifer McNally.
 
Additionally, the squad placed second at the NCAA East Regional behind All-Region performances from the same four women and earned their first national berth in 10 years. At the national meet, the quartet, along with Kristina Coiro, Lindsey McLaughlin and Katie Hundermark combine to place better than their national ranking and earned a 26th place finish. They were one of just three schools from the NE-10 to and East Region to compete at the national meet.

Combined, 15 men and women were named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for academic success.
 

Kaitlyn DeStefano
Volleyball (25-12, 13-2 NE-10; NE-10 Tournament Runner-up; NCAA Semifinal)
The Panthers continued several streaks in the fall of 2012, posting the programs sixth straight season with 20 or more wins, sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and earning a spot in a third consecutive NCAA Division II East Regional Semifinal. Adelphi posted a record of 25-12 overall and 13-2 in the Northeast-10, finishing second in both the regular season standings and in the Northeast-10 Championship.

Graduate student Bianca Hernandez, senior Chelsea Overholt, junior Katie Bryson and sophomore Kaitlyn DeStefano were each honored with All-Northeast-10 selection. Both DeStefano and Overholt received first-team nods, while Hernandez was a second-team honoree and Bryson was a third-team selection. DeStefano, Hernandez and Bryson were also named AVCA All-Region selections, while Overholt joined DeStefano on the NCAA All-East Regional Championship team. Finally, DeStefano was honored as the first AVCA All-American in the history of the program with an honorable mention selection.

In addition several Panthers reached milestone numbers this season as Overholt concluded her career with over 1,000 kills (1,005) and Hernandez turned in over 1,000 digs in just two years of action for Adelphi (1,067). DeStefano set a single season record with 185 blocks, while Hernandez's total of 589 kills this season is second on the single season list and Bryson's total of 1,246 assists is third on the Panthers single season chart.

In addition, the squad had 13 players named to the Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for academic achievement.

Field Hockey (8-12, 6-4 NE-10; NE-10 Semifinals)

The field hockey team finished the season with an overall record of 8-12 and a 6-4 mark in conference play, including the first home playoff win in program history with a 4-3 win over Southern Connecticut in the NE-10 Quarterfinals.
 
After opening the season with eight consecutive losses, the Panthers managed to win seven of their next 10 games to secure the fourth seed in the postseason and made it to the NE-10 Semifinals for the first time since 2009.
 
Freshman Molly Cuevas was named the NE-10 Rookie of the Year and also landed on the All-Conference First Team and All Rookie Team. Cuevas led a pack of five All-Conference picks for Adelphi that saw seniors Cassie Cabral, Kristine Puzio and Emilee Rahner selected to the All-Conference Second Team.
 
Cuevas led the Panthers with eight assists and 22 points, and finished second on the team with seven goals. One of five players to start and play all 18 games, the rookie hovered in the top 10 in the league in scoring for the majority of the season and finished tied for fifth in the NE-10 in assists. She recorded eight multiple-point contests and played virtually every minute of every game this season.

The team was crowned an NCAA Division II Statistical Champion for defensive saves with 28, leading the nation thanks to sophomore Briana Rubenstein whose nine defensive saves ranked her third in all of DII field hockey. 16 players were honored with selection to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
 
Golf (NE-10 Champions, 14th NCAA East/Atlantic Region)

Snouffer Champ

The golf team had successful Fall and Spring campaigns, capturing the programs third Northeast-10 Championship in four years and also being selected to compete in the NCAA East/Atlantic Region Tournament where they finished 14th.

Ryan Snouffer led the Panthers at the Northeast-10 Championship, joining Louis Kelly as the only Adelphi golfers to earn Northeast-10 Player of The Year and Rookie of The Year in the same season. He placed first at the Northeast-10 Championship and was an All-NE-10 honoree, along with Louis Kelly (2nd overall) and Aaron Burton (7th overall).

As a team, they placed in the top-four at six different tournaments including a win at the Adelphi/AIC Invitational.  At the NCAA East/Atlantic Region Tournament, Kelly was the Panther's top finisher, placing 38th.

As a team, the squad took home the Northeast-10 Conference Team Academic Excellence Award with a 3.388 average GPA and had six players named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
 
Men's Basketball (14-15, 11-11 NE-10; NE-10 First Round)
The Adelphi University men's basketball team finished the season with a 14-15 overall record and 11-11 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play to earn the seventh seed in the NE-10 Tournament.
 
The Panthers hosted 10th-seeded Saint Rose but fell 67-57 to close out the 2012-13 campaign and miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years. After a rough start that saw Adelphi lose five of its first seven games, the Panthers turned things around by winning eight of their next 10 contests to get back in postseason contention. Off the court, six players were named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
 
Senior John Calarco led the squad in scoring with 11.8 points per game and a .414 clip from 3-point range, and sank a game-winning jumper in a pivotal 65-64 regular season victory over eventual NE-10 champs Southern New Hampshire.

Women's Basketball (15-13, 11-11 NE-10; NE-10 Quarterfinals)

The Adelphi University women's basketball team returned to form this season and went 15-13 overall and 11-11 in Northeast-10 Conference play, marking the most overall wins since 2008 and the first NE-10 Tournament bid since joining the league.
 
The Panthers won their first-ever NE-10 playoff game with an 80-77 overtime win against American International in the first round, then fell to top-seeded Bentley 89-80 in NE-10 Quarterfinals.

In the classroom, the Panthers saw nine players make the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll with GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
 
Junior Sade Jackson led all of Division II in assists with 7.4 per game, finished first in the nation with three triple-doubles, and became the program's all-time and single-season assist leader. Junior Jessica Kitrys was named All-Met First Team, NE-10 All-Conference Second Team and became the 20th player in Adelphi women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
 
Indoor Track and Field (Women T7th; Men 6th at NE-10 Championships)
During the indoor track and field season, there were a total of seven school records broken while eight All-Region awards were earned between the men and women combined.
 
On the men's side, they placed sixth at the NE-10 Championships with 39 points. Andrew Coelho hit qualifying marks in both the 3k and 5k and earned All-Region honors in each while breaking the 3k school record. Teammate James Panetta earned an NCAA qualifying mark and All-Region status en route to breaking the 5k school record. Both William Marois and Ryan Healy earned All-Region status in the 800m run while Brandon Joachim set the school record in the 60H.
 
On the women's side, they tied for seventh place at the NE-10 Championships with 26 points. Eilzabeth Eickelberg broke the school record in the mile, earned an NCAA provisional mark in the 3k and earned All-Region honors in both events. Kristina Coiro was an All-Region selection for her time in the 800m. They both joined with Larissa Melendez and Jeniffer McNally to break the school record in the 4x800m relay. Kelly Clifford and Cassandra Jean also broke school records in the high jump and 60m dash respectively.
 
Swimming (NE-10 - M-6th, W-7th, METs - M-16th, W-11th)

The women's swim team placed eightth at the ECAC Pre-season Championships, seventh at the NE-10 Conference Championships and rounded out the season with a 11th place showing at the Metropolitan Conference Championships. The men finished ninth at ECAC's, sixth at NE-10's and 16th at MET's. 16 men and women were named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for academic achievement.

 
Freshman Jalen Jennings made Adelphi history when he became the first diver in program history to capture a Northeast-10 Championship. He was named Co-Diver of The Meet at the Northeast-10 Championships after he won the one-meter diving championship, setting a school record and qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Jennings would go on to capture the Metropolitan Diving Championship on both the one meter and three meter boards and competed at the NCAA Championship meet in Alabama.
 
Bowling (79-37; Northeast Conference Champions)
The Adelphi University bowling team capped a historical season with the program's first-ever Northeast Conference Championship after sweeping postseason play as the sixth seed. The Panthers set program records for the most wins over .500 (79-37), fewest losses and best winning percentage (.681).
 
The Brown and Gold defeated 17 of 18 nationally-ranked opponents, including top-ranked Nebraska and has now defeated every team that has won the NCAA Championship since its inception. Senior captain Samantha Morlack reeled in several individual honors, including NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player, National Tenpin Coaches Association All-American Third Team and NEC All-Conference Second Team while qualifying for the Intercollegiate Singles National Finals.
 
Sophomore Erica Schneider was an NEC Winter Commissioner's Honor Roll pick and became the first bowler in Adelphi history to compete at the Team USA Trials, where she finished 58th overall. Additionally, Morlack along with Michelle Fitzpatrick, Jessica Lutz, Colleen O'Neil, Kathryn Rivera, Nicole Scher and Holly Zink earned NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll status.

Kevin Kennedy
Men's Lacrosse (14-3, 10-1 NE-10; NE-10 Tournament Runner Up, NE-10 Regular Season Co-Champs; NCAA Final Four Participant)

The men's lacrosse team finished the season with a 14-3 overall record and a 10-1 mark in conference action. They jumped out to a 6-0 record to tie the best start in program history and then furthered the mark by going 9-0 before falling to St. Michael's College. Beginning the season ranked #7 nationally, the Panthers continued to improve all season long and checked in as high as #2 for four weeks this season.
 
In their final regular season game, they clinched a share of the Northeast-10 Regular Season Title after a 14-6 win over Bentley; their first since joining the conference back during the 2009-10 season. In the first round of the tournament, they made quick work of St. Michael's, 22-6, but had to settle for runner-up honors after a 7-5 loss to Le Moyne in the championship.
 
Earning the top seed in the North Region, they hosted the #5 NYIT Bears in the first round of NCAA action. Advancing by way of a 14-11 score, they were once again pitted against Le Moyne in the Final Four. However, it would be as far as they would advance before falling 16-13.
 
All-Conference accolades were awarded to Joe Celano, Kevin Kennedy, Jeff Melsopp, Gregory Puskuldjian, Eric Janssen, Nick Watson and Salvatore Tuttle who was also named the NE-10 Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Janssen and Melsopp were named to the All-Tournament Team. Celano, Kennedy, Melsopp and Puskuldjian earned All-American honors as well. Kennedy and Melsopp were selected to play in the USILA North-South All-Star Game while Kennedy was given the USILA Long Pole Midfielder Award. 26 players were named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for academic achievement.
 
Women's Lacrosse (18-3, 11-1; NE-10 Tournament Runner Up, NE-10 Regular Season Co-Champs; NCAA Final Four Participant)
The women's lacrosse team posted an 18-3 overall record with an 11-1 mark in NE-10 action. Beginning the season nationally ranked at #5, the Panthers ripped off 11 straight wins and earned as high as #3 ranking before falling to Le Moyne and suffering their only loss of the regular season.
 
Their 10-4 win over Bentley in the regular season finale locked them into a share of the NE-10 Regular Season title and earned them the #2 seed in the conference tournament. There, they defeated Stonehill in the first round, 11-7 but then wound up as the runner up after losing to Le Moyne, 8-6. However, they exacted revenge on the Dolphins in their third meeting of the year in Syracuse, N.Y. by rallying in the second to overcome a five-goal deficit and win 9-8 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Advancing to the Final Four, they fell to eventual champions LIU-Post.
 
All-Conference honors were awarded to Devan Crimi, Katelynn Ciaci Jacqueline Williams, Alexa Froccaro, Danielle Jaycox, Camille Rosselini and Rachel O'Brien who was also named the Rookie of the Year. Lauren Janelli and Jaycox earned All-Tournament Team kudos as well. Crimi and Williams were later honored with First-Team IWLCA All-American status. Crimi also took home COSIDA Academic All-District kudos.

In the classroom, 21 players were named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Outdoor Track and Field (Women 6th; Men 10th at NE-10 Championships)
The men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed much success during the outdoor campaign that saw a handful of school records break. On the men's side, they finished 10th at the NE-10 Championships. Additionally, Brandon Joachim broke the school record in the 110H at the championships while James Panetta and Andrew Coelho earned All-Region honors in the 10k.
 
On the women's side, seven individual school records were broken while three relay marks were set. Larissa Melendez (3k Steeplechase) Elizabeth Eickelberg (5k), Kristina Coiro (800m), Rosie Vassilatos (400H) and Kelly Clifford (LJ, TJ, HJ) were responsible for the individual records. Meanwhile, the 4x4 (Coiro, Angela Mongitore, Vassilatos, Cassandra Jean), 4x8 (Eickelberg, Coiro, Melendez, Cecilia Capozzoli) and sprint medley (Coiro, Mongitore, Vassilatos, Jean) relays were all broken.
 
Melendez and Vassilatos were NE-10 champions in their respective events after finishing first at the conference meet while Eickelberg was named All-Conference with a second place finish in the 5k. All-Region honors were awarded to Melendez (3k Steeple), Eickelberg (5k), Clifford (HJ), Coiro (800m), Kaste (5k, 10k), Mongitore (400), Vassilatos (400H). Vassilatos was the lone Panther to be selected into the NCAA Championship field for the 400H.
 
Combined, the Panthers had 34 men and women selected to the the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Softball (41-19, 16-5 Division; NE-10 Regular Season and Tournament Champions; NCAA East Super Regional Finalist)

 
The Adelphi University softball team assembled one of its finest seasons in program history that saw the Panthers tie the school record with 41 wins, capture their first Northeast-10 Conference regular season and Championship titles, and make their first trip to the NCAA East Super Regional tournament.
 
Adelphi posted a dominant 25-5 record in NE-10 play, 16-5 in Divisional action, to earn the top seed in the conference tournament, during which the Panthers knocked out Southern Connecticut and New Haven en route to the NE-10 crown. The Panthers then swept through the NCAA East Regional with three straight wins to advance to the Super Regional, where Molloy handed the Panthers a pair of losses to end their hopes of a trip to the College World Series.

Emily Dorko, a Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team pick and NFCA and NCAA All-Region selection, had a record setting season, posting a program record 107 hits and setting the career steals record. She was also named an NFCA First Team All-American and Daktronics Third-Team All-American. Victoria Wink and Katie Andrews also garnered All-Conference and NFCA and NCAA All-Region honors while Elizabeth Lindner, Lauren Watts and Devon Kelly each took home NE-10 All-Conference honors. Dorko and Lindner were named to the NE-10 All-Tournament team with Watts being named the tournament's most outstanding player.

In the classroom, the team was honored with the NE-10 Team Academic Excellence Award and saw 14 players named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll; in addition, Dorko was honored with the NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. For the first time in program history, the coaching staff was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as the Division II East Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
 
Baseball (23-24-1, 11-10 Division; NE-10 Tournament)
The Adelphi University baseball team returned to the postseason for the ninth time in 10 years under Head Coach Dom Scala after posting a 23-24-1 record in regular season play and 11-10 mark in division action to earn the fourth seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division. The Panthers took on top-seeded and eventual NE-10 Champions New Haven in the opening round of the playoffs and fell 5-0 after the Chargers pitchers turned in a combined three-hit shutout performance.
 
Adelphi placed seven players on NE-10 All-Conference Teams, marking the most single-season all-league honors since 2006, the most NE-10 accolades since the Panthers joined the conference in 2010, and tied for most awards for a single NE-10 team this year. Closer Dillon McNamara and second baseman Vincent Sharkey made the NE-10 First Team while also landing on Daktronics and NCBWA All-East Region teams. McNamara led the NE-10 with 13 saves to set the Adelphi single season and career records for saves, while Anthony Zarrella, an NE-10 Second Team pick, surpassed the 100 career RBI mark this season. McNamara also earned three All-American nods while being drafted by the New York Yankees in the 27th round (824th overall pick).

The team took home the NE-10 Team Academic Excellence Award and 16 players placed on the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
 
Men's Tennis (13-8, 6-3 NE-10; NE-10 Semifinals)
The Adelphi University men's tennis team played its way to the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals where the Panthers fell to top-seeded Merrimack, but not before going 12-7 in regular season play for the most overall wins in recent history.

Adelphi posted a 6-3 mark in league play and placed five players on NE-10 All-Conference Teams: Boris Tiberkov (First Team No. 5 singles), Alan Chocron (Second Team No. 4 singles), Bryan Kallenberg (Third Team No. 2 singles), Chiwete Njokanma (Third Team No. 6 singles) and Sander Brenner (All Rookie Team). Six players were named to the the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. Andreas Hammar also earned NE-10 All-Championship Team honors as he won three of four matches between the opening and Semifinal rounds of the NE-10 Championship. He was also awarded with COSIDA Academic All-District and All-American kudos, and the NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.
 
Women's Tennis (13-7, 8-3 NE-10; NE-10 Semifinals)
The Adelphi University women's tennis team earned a trip to the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals for the fourth consecutive season after a 12-6 regular season mark, but a 5-2 loss to top-ranked Southern New Hampshire led to the Panthers missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years.
 
Top-flight staple Maria Toft earned NE-10 All-Conference Second Team at No. 1 singles along with NE-10 All-Championship Team honors, while Samra Redzematovic made Second Team at No. 5 singles and Gaby Adia landed on the Third Team for No. 4 singles. Adelphi closed out the regular season on a five-match winning streak and blanked fifth-seeded Bentley in the opening round of the NE-10 Championship to give the Panthers a season-best six wins in a row.

Six players were named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Toft was honored with the NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.
